Problem Space

"What is the nutritional value for this food item? I don't know where to find the tool or if I'm meeting or going over my required nutritional/caloric intakes."

Although MyFitnessPal is among the most widely used application to track diet and exercise, there are still several issues with the interface that affect the overall experience.

Key Pain Points

Lack of confidence in searching, scanning or adding food items
Main functions of the app are hidden on secondary screens
User’s are unsure where to locate their daily nutrition progress

Design Challenge

How might we develop a tool that provides accurate, detailed, and personalized information on the nutritional content of food items with an emphasis on the search and scan functionality for an easier user experience.

Value Proposition

I feel my solution to the problem is unique because through the use of simplified navigation and bringing the apps core functions to the forefront, it will show the end user how to correctly and easily locate the scan feature within the app and understand if they are meeting their nutritional goals/macros.

User Interviews & Insights

I conducted interviews with 5 users of the app, which included both first time and regular users who had different pain points and goals. I found that:
80%
Users have tried MyFitnessPal at some point in the past
40%
Users were able to track their meals, but in different ways
40%
Users are regularily active and had exercised within the past week
50%
Users unable to located the barcode scan feature within the app
The target users that I concentrated on for this study were Alexis, Jasiv and Avigail:

User Testing

I conducted 5 user tests using a low-fidelity prototype I created in InVision. With this I was able to pinpoint missing steps within my initial user flow. I was able to add more wireframes to my search food item user flow afterwards and change the order of my wireframes so that it best replicated the natural process a user would go through when performing these core user tasks.

Next Steps

I will be conducting more user testing in order to continue refining the UI for a more simplified experience for the user.
